RICHLANDS, Va. (WJHL) — A dedicated K-9 officer from the Richlands Police Department is on the mend after a critical surgery saved his life following a sudden medical crisis while on duty.
The incident unfolded as Officer Justin Daniels and his K-9 partner, Moose, were carrying out their law enforcement duties. Moose began to act out of character, prompting Officer Daniels to recognize that something was seriously wrong. It quickly became clear that Moose was experiencing a severe medical emergency, leading Officer Daniels to rush the dog to a veterinarian in nearby Cedar Bluff.
Veterinarians provided initial stabilizing care and diagnosed Moose with bloat, known medically as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), an acute and potentially fatal condition. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Moose was rapidly transferred to an emergency clinic in Blountville, Tennessee, where he underwent urgent surgery to address the condition.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Chief of Police Ronald Holt emphasized the integral role of their K-9 units, saying, “Our canine partners are much more than simply a tool to fight crime. They become part of our law enforcement family.” He urged the community to keep Moose and Officer Daniels in their thoughts and expressed gratitude for Officer Daniels’ swift actions, which were pivotal to Moose’s successful recovery. “He is to be commended,” Holt stated, recognizing the officer’s timely intervention that ensured a positive outcome for Moose.
Moose has been transported back to Cedar Bluff to recover and receive specialized pain management, the department said. The police department thanked both the Valley Animal Clinic and the Airport Pet Emergency Clinic for their swift help in saving Moose’s life.
“Additionally, the department would like to express its sincere appreciation to the Virginia State Police and the Tennessee Highway Patrol for their assistance and willingness to coordinate emergency transportation along the route, ensuring Moose received care as quickly as possible,” the department stated in the release.
The department said they expect to welcome K-9 Moose back in full health in the near future, and updates on his recovery will be shared on the department’s social media as they become available.
