ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) – In a dramatic turn of events, law enforcement officials successfully captured a fugitive following a tense three-hour standoff in Carter County. The operation, involving both the Carter County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service, took place on Gap Creek Road.
Jeffrey Scott Brewington, 42, had been serving his sentence at a rehabilitation facility, commonly referred to as a halfway house, in Knoxville. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Brewington removed his GPS monitoring device and absconded from the facility on June 2.
His failure to return led to Brewington being charged with a federal escape, as he remained under the custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons until his sentence at the halfway house was completed, the Marshals Service reported.
