CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – As Kaden Feagin gears up for his senior year with the Illini in 2026, he will be embracing a fresh challenge on the field.
Feagin is transitioning from his previous role as a running back to take on the position of tight end, according to head coach Bret Bielema, who made the announcement in February.
With confidence in his physical attributes and versatile abilities, Feagin is optimistic about excelling in this new position. He will collaborate with Jared Elliott, who recently joined the Illini as the new tight ends coach, following Robby Discher’s departure to Ohio State.
“Elliott is an outstanding coach,” Feagin remarked. “His passion for the game is evident. When he enters the room, he instantly commands attention and respect, ensuring everyone is engaged and attentive.”

Feagin, an Atwood, Illinois native, says his continued ability to put on weight, combined with an injury history, were among the factors leading him to suggest the change to Bielema.
He knows the mindset, lined up on the line of scrimmage rather than in the backfield, will be different.
“At tight end, you’re going to hit somebody,” he said. “Running back you’re trying to avoid being hit, in a way – in some parts of the game… The run game and then learning the offense in a different way.”

Feagin says he has bulked up from 245 pounds to 262 pounds during his time in the Illini football program.
He says Coach Bielema was ‘super excited’ when Feagin presented the idea.
“When I told him, his reaction, it kind of got me excited, too,” Feagin said. “I just love the sport of football. Whatever is going to keep me playing the longest. If I play tight end I have a chance to have a longer career, as well… It seemed like the best decision for me.”
The best decision for himself, and for the team, he believes.

He plans to work to improve as a blocker in the new role. He has been watching pro film, specifically Travis Kelce and George Kittle, as he makes the transition to tight end.
Feagin ran for 507 yards on 122 carries in 2025, plus 188 receiving yards on 16 receptions – totaling nine touchdowns on his junior campaign.
