ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Buying a fishing license in Illinois isn’t just cheap — the money used also goes to an important cause.

When buyers purchase an Illinois fishing license, they’re paying for fishing privileges for the year. But, they’re also investing in conservation, education and economic activity throughout Illinois.

Illinois fishing licenses go on sale March 1 and cost $15.

“The successful management of quality fishing opportunities relies on the commitment and support of anglers, and that starts with buying a fishing license,” IDNR chief of fisheries Mike McClelland said. “By purchasing a fishing license, anglers are ensuring sport fishing, hatchery production, and habitat enhancements are here for current and future generations to enjoy in communities throughout Illinois.”

Money made from fishing licenses goes to support the Illinois Department of Natural Resources division of fisheries. General revenue from Illinois taxes does not fund fisheries programs, like research, fisheries management, hatchery operations, invasive species prevention, outreach, and other initiatives, according to the IDNR.

The number of fishing licenses sold, combined with land size also contributes to the amount of funding a state receives by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (this money comes from a tax on purchases of fishing equipment, boat fuel, and outdoor accessories).

Illinois fishing licenses and stamps for 2025 can be purchased online. In Central Illinois, licenses can also be purchased at IDNR vendor locations. You can find a location near you here. Licenses for the 2024 season expire March 31.
