SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The temporary federal funding freeze has caused confusion for organizations and people alike. However, there is now some clarity on what comes next.

Following the initial memo earlier this week, 22 states, including Illinois, sued the federal government. This led to a federal judge blocking the order on Wednesday. This set the table for a court hearing Monday to determine the legality of the funding freeze.

A political science professor at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) said Monday will focus on how much power the Trump administration has over federal spending.

“This is about the question of presidential power in relation to Congress, and to a lesser extent in relation to the courts,” said Dr. Kent Redfield. “This is a multi-front sort of thing.”

The hearing was initiated by multiple state attorneys general, including Illinois’ Kwame Raoul.
