Justice Department Removes Jan. 6 Defendant News Releases from Website

WASHINGTON – The Department of Justice has recently taken down news releases from its website concerning criminal cases tied to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The department described the removed content, which detailed various prosecutions, as “partisan propaganda.”

This removal marks a new effort by the Trump administration to significantly alter the narrative surrounding the events of that day. On January 6, hundreds of supporters of former President Donald Trump breached the Capitol building in an attempt to disrupt the certification of President Joe Biden’s 2020 electoral victory.

Upon resuming office in January 2025, Trump swiftly pardoned or commuted the sentences of more than 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the Capitol breach. This included those who had been found guilty of assaulting law enforcement officers using flagpoles, a hockey stick, and even a crutch as weapons.

In a move that has sparked bipartisan outrage, the Justice Department unveiled a $1.776 billion fund on Monday. This fund is intended to compensate Trump supporters who believe they were wrongfully investigated or prosecuted. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has not excluded the possibility of compensating rioters convicted of violent acts, adding to the controversy.

The department’s actions came under public scrutiny after a journalist noted on the social media platform X that the Justice Department was surreptitiously deleting news releases associated with the January 6 incident. This included information about a Texas man who pleaded guilty to assault and faced unrelated state charges of soliciting a minor. The department’s “rapid response” account retorted that there was nothing covert about the process.

“We are proud to reverse the DOJ’s weaponization under the Biden administration. We will do everything in our power to make whole those who were persecuted for political purposes,” the post said. “This includes stripping DOJ’s website of partisan propaganda.”

Among the releases removed from the site were those concerning seditious conspiracy cases against members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, far-right extremist groups. The Justice Department, in an unopposed motion last month, asked a federal appeals court to vacate those seditious conspiracy convictions, a request that was granted Thursday. The department on Friday moved to dismiss the cases against the group members.
