Longwood Evaluates Strategic Budget Adjustments Amid Potential Property Tax Overhaul

LONGWOOD, Fla. – In light of ongoing ambiguity surrounding state-level property tax reforms, the Longwood City Commission is set to evaluate the city’s financial health.

This Wednesday, city commissioners will gather for a budget workshop to explore potential funding strategies for the upcoming fiscal year.

The session is strategically scheduled just under two weeks prior to a special state legislative meeting focusing on property tax adjustments.

On April 20, state lawmakers will deliberate over various proposals, which might include phasing out non-school property taxes or implementing immediate reductions.

Florida Senate President Ben Albritton, a Republican from Wauchula, highlighted these options as the legislative session concluded.

“The senate is still dedicated to the proposition of giving property tax relief,” Albritton said. “Threading the needle on this is about making sure it’s meaningful and protecting the core services that local government provides.”

With the issue unresolved in the legislature, municipalities have discussed the possibility of budget cuts.

City managers across the state, meanwhile, have been engaged with state lawmakers.

“We’ve had conversations about it,” Albritton said. “Here’s where these types of changes would impact what we’re doing for our citizens, and more importantly, what we’re required to do for them.”

Wednesday’s budget workshop with Longwood commissioner is scheduled for 1 p.m. at City Hall.
