AUGUSTA, Ga. – A heartwarming addition has arrived at Wellstar Golisano Children’s Hospital of Georgia as they welcomed Popcorn, the latest member of their facility dog team, on Tuesday.
Popcorn, a delightful mix of Golden Retriever and Labradoodle, is two years old and marks the first male canine to join the team. His role is to bring joy and comfort to children visiting the outpatient pediatric specialty clinics.
“He’s just a big sweetheart,” remarked Harleigh Smith, who serves as both a facility dog handler and a child life specialist at the hospital. “Popcorn is our largest dog and the first male in our child life team, whether human or animal. But he’s truly a gentle giant. When he enters a room, his expression, with those big puppy eyes, captivates everyone. I prefer to call them puppy eyes because they exude joy rather than sadness.”
Children receiving care don’t have to wait for Popcorn’s visit. They can drop by the playroom on the hospital’s 5th floor to enjoy crafts and games alongside him.
