URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Carl Burkybile was one of many gassing up the snowblower on Tuesday, something that hasn’t been needed much this winter.
“It’s come pretty fast,” he said about the snow. “I was really surprised when I came out and decided I needed my snow blower.”
Vince Gustafson is the Operations Deputy Director for Urbana Public Works. He said his crew was ready to go.
“It timed out just pretty perfectly for us so that we are able to have our trucks out on the street putting down salt there, right at the beginning of the storm,” Gustafson said.
Snowplows were able to put salt on the roads so by late morning, most of the streets were clear.
Jordan McGuire has only had to shovel his sidewalk twice this winter. He said he’s used to the unpredictable weather in Illinois.
“I don’t try and predict anything,” he said. “It’s just kind of take what you can get.”
Burkybile isn’t too phased by the snow fall, either.
“We say in Illinois, ‘If you don’t like the weather, stick around. It’ll change,’” Burkybile said. “So, I just figured if it comes, it comes, and we’ll deal with it.”
Gustafson said his crews will still be ready in case the wet streets turn to ice. He wants to remind people to be patient around snowplows.
“If you see the trucks out there, please keep your distance and stay back,” Gustafson said. “Give them adequate room to do their work.”
Gustafson said Urbana Public Works used about 120 tons of salt on the roads on Friday. It seemed to do the trick, but colder weather may bring about the need for additional salt.
