JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A nurse in Johnson City has been charged with attempted credit card fraud and identity theft after allegedly stealing from a hospital patient.

According to an affidavit obtained by News Channel 11, a Johnson City Medical Center patient told the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) that their debit card had been fraudulently used on Jan. 20 and 21.

The card was reportedly used at American Eagle, DoorDash, Zara and Uber for $1,086.

The affidavit states the name connected to the transactions came back as Charlotte Nangca, who was a nurse at Johnson City Medical Center at the time.

The JCPD reportedly obtained a written confession to the crimes from Nangca, and she was charged with attempted fraudulent use of a debit/credit card and identity theft. A warrant for her arrest was issued on Jan. 23.

On Tuesday, Nangca was arrested by the JCPD. Her bond was reportedly set at $2,500.

Ballad Health issued the following statement regarding Nangca’s arrest:

“On Wednesday, Jan. 22, an allegation was made that a team member committed theft from a patient at Johnson City Medical Center. The matter was immediately reported to law enforcement by the hospital for investigation and an internal investigation was commenced.

Theft from a patient is unacceptable and a complete violation of trust. The individual team member, who acted alone, is no longer employed by Johnson City Medical Center, and Johnson City Medical Center is cooperating with law enforcement. Johnson City Medical Center intends to pursue all legal options, including reporting the matter to the individual’s professional regulatory board.

At the time of hiring, the now-former team member had an active, clear and unrestricted license to practice nursing, as determined through the stringent background screening process conducted for licensed professionals. This process includes ensuring there were no previous disciplinary actions taken against the individual by any other state licensing board. No such action was reported.

Theft from a patient will not be tolerated, and in any confirmed instance, Ballad Health will pursue the full extent of the law and the full extent of professional action against the responsible individual.”
