CHICAGO (WGN) — Almost immediately after Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost’s election as Pope, the question emerged: is the pontiff a fan of the Cubs or the White Sox?

Speaking to Nexstar’s WGN on Thursday, Prevost’s brother John answered the burning question: Pope Leo XIV, as Prevost is now known, is a fan of the South Siders, a nickname for the White Sox, who play at Rate Field on Chicago’s South Side.

But the household was split: mom was a Cubs fan and his father was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Holy Name Cathedral’s rector, Father Gregory Sakowicz, remarked to the Associated Press that the sun came out in Chicago when the new pope was announced, a coincidence he described as “God’s way of remaining anonymous.”

He said he was “happily shocked,” and also wondered if the new Pope supported the Cubs or Sox. When a journalist said she’d heard he’s for the Cubs, Sakowicz chuckled. “God bless him,” he said.

To Sakowicz’s possible disappointment, John Prevost confirmed that his brother is a lifelong White Sox fan.

“He was never, ever a Cubs fan, so I don’t know where that came from,” Prevost said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
