BEMENT, Ill. (WCIA) — Schools across Central Illinois are grappling with sudden power outages, leading to unexpected cancellations. The latest to join this list is Bement CUSD, following in the footsteps of Mattoon High School and Unity Seven Schools, which faced similar disruptions earlier this week.

Unique to Bement’s situation, the power issues surfaced after the school day had already commenced. Superintendent Mary Vogt shared on the district’s website that the trouble started when sparks emerged from an electrical panel in the school’s kitchen, prompting an immediate precautionary power shutdown in that section of the building.

“Due to the rapid response in cutting the power, the fire alarm didn’t go off,” explained Vogt. “Nonetheless, we took no chances and promptly contacted the Bement Fire Department. Emergency personnel quickly arrived to ensure the safety of the premises.”

In related news, Danville Police and the local school district have successfully addressed and cleared a potential threat at North Ridge Middle School, maintaining a focus on student safety across the region.

Out of an abundance of caution and due to the lack of power, the decision was made to dismiss school early. An electrician arrived at the school to determine the cause of the issue and assess what repairs may be needed.

“I want to thank our staff and students for responding calmly and following procedures, as well as the Bement Fire Department for their quick assistance,” Vogt said. “We appreciate Birch Bus Service responding quickly to provide transportation for the early dismissal.”

Following further assessment, Vogt later announced that school will not be in session on Thursday. Ameren crews are still working to address the problem, which was found in the electrical lines coming into the building.

Vogt said additional information will be sent out on Thursday regarding the status of school on Friday.

Because of the lack of power in the building, Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting has been moved to the Lions Club building in Bement.
