ST. CLOUD, Fla. – Electricity has been restored to a St. Cloud mobile home park after residents said they endured several days without power, fueling worries over dangerous heat, medical equipment needs and what they described as recurring issues with the property’s electrical infrastructure.
The outage at St. Cloud Mobile Home Park left some areas of the community without lights Saturday night, residents said.
The Orlando Utilities Commission, known as OUC, said the disruption stemmed from a private power line, meaning service could not be turned back on until the necessary repairs were made.
But for people living in the park, the loss of electricity was not simply a temporary inconvenience.
“I can’t wait to go to work and get air conditioning. But these people are here all day,” one resident said. “Health problems, oxygen, everything else. Without power, they don’t care.”
Residents said they have experienced multiple outages and, in some cases, have gone days without electricity.
“They’ll put a notice on the door tomorrow. Pay your rent. What? Power’s out?” another resident said.
Another resident called the situation “negligence.”
Alfredo Sanchez said the repeated outages have also created problems for residents who rely on medication that requires refrigeration.
Sanchez said he is now spending about $50 a day to keep a generator running.
“I have my insulin medication,” Sanchez said. “On the last power outage, I lost everything. I had to go back to my doctor and they gave me my medication again.”
This is the second time this month News 6 has reported on residents at the park going days without power.
But residents say the issue is not new.
Jimmy Matteo said outages have become a recurring problem.
“This is three days a week. It’s 112 degrees in my home tonight. This is unacceptable,” Matteo said.
OUC said it shut off power after a fire call at the property at the request of the St. Cloud Fire Department.
According to OUC, the shutdown was prompted by a safety concern involving a private power line.
OUC said electricity could only be restored after the city confirmed the necessary repairs had been completed.
Residents said they believe more extensive repairs are needed.
“They need to repair the whole wiring and get a private electrician. They just do a patch. The city is not happy with it,” one resident said.
St. Cloud Mayor Chris Robertson arrived Saturday night as an OUC truck came to the property to restore power.
“This is on private property, and OUC has done everything they could on their side,” Robertson said. “The city of St. Cloud has done everything they can. It is a private matter as well.”
Power was restored roughly 30 minutes before the latest update, but residents said they remain concerned about whether the fix will last.
“We’ve been here multiple times. What’s going to be different this time?” a resident asked the mayor.
Robertson said the city is now taking a more active role in addressing the problem.
“Well, this time the city of St. Cloud has boots on the ground,” Robertson said. “The chief building official is involved, code enforcement’s involved. We’re going to ensure that this property owner follows all the protocol and the code here in the city of St. Cloud to fix this problem once and for all.”
While electricity has been restored, residents say they want a permanent solution to the recurring outages rather than another temporary repair.
