AUGUSTA, Ga. () – After 53 years in business, a spokesperson for Red Wing Rollerway has announced the skating rink is officially closing its doors.
The skating rink was a Washington Road staple for more than 5 decades, but now announcing they have reached an agreement to sell the property to a nearby Mercedes-Benz.
They will use it to expand their dealership.
Community members say they were surprised to hear this news.
“It was shocking. I thought it was going to be here forever,” said Brigette Cherry.
A spokesperson for Red Wing confirms with NewsChannel 6 that the process to close has been in the works for several months.
They say despite reports, the owner does not have cancer, but is simply looking to retire.
“I’m not sure how old the owner is, but at some point, everybody, you know–job well done for him. Good for Mercedes as well to expand their business as well,” said Cherry.
The Soul City Sirens reacting to the news, saying it was a community hub where they made countless memories for 16 years.
They released the following statement:
It is with heavy hearts that we received the news of the closure of Redwing Roller Way. This turn of events has left us deeply saddened and at a loss. The closure of Redwing is more than just a loss of physical location; it’s a loss of a community hub where, for 16 years the Sirens forged unforgettable memories together through blood, sweat, and tears, leaving it all on the rink floor.
The Sirens have had the pleasure and the ability of being able to host practices and bouts at Redwing as well as the opportunity to present fun skate night events such as our Toys for Tots Skate night last year. The owner and Redwing staff were great to work with, the building was big enough to hold a crowd of people, and those accommodations combined helped the Sirens establish a home at Redwing.”
Red Wing says they do not plan to open another location, as it’s time to put up the skates–marking the end of an era for an iconic skating rink.
The Sirens also say that due to Red Wing closing, they are now a “Homeless” Roller Derby Team, and are actively looking for a replacement practice space.
They say they would love to hear from anyone in the CSRA with suitable skating space.
