SAVANNAH, Ga. () — The Savannah High Blue Jackets’ defense shined in a Friday night scrimmage vs. Groves High School.
After jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead over the Rebels, Blue Jackets senior linebacker James Kelly turned defense into offense after returning a mishandled snap.
The touchdown extended the Blue Jackets lead to 13.
On the next drive, the Rebels tried to switch things up with a wildcat formation but were quickly swarmed by Blue Jacket defenders in the backfield.
The Rebels switched quarterbacks in the second quarter, but the Blue Jackets defense remained strong. Senior safety Eli Frieson flew downhill to deliver a massive hit, setting the stage for a night full of defense.
The Blue Jackets went on to win the scrimmage 26-13 despite the Rebels gaining some momentum in the second half.
Friday’s win serves as a morale boost for Savannah High after struggling against Islands high school last Friday in a scrimmage that did not include scores or downs.
The Blue Jackets begin non-region competition next Friday, Aug. 15 vs. Frederica Academy.
