SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Six people were shot and two were killed over the course of the Feb. 10 weekend in the greater Savannah area.

19-year-old J’Quan Reed died at Memorial Health University Medical Center after being shot once just behind between Barnard St. and Bay Ln. Saturday night just after 10 p.m. according to the Chatham County Coroner’s Office.

Earlier that morning at around 8 a.m., Chatham County Police say they found a 29-year-old man, identified by the coroner’s office as Donta’veous Sharrod Cockfield Marshall, shot dead in the Brassler and St. George Blvd. area.

Maj. Shinita Young with the Savannah Police Department (SPD) says their investigations are in the early stages.

“Right now, as far as all of our incidents, basically we don’t have any information,” says Maj. Young,” It’s still really early in the investigation, and our detectives are definitely out there working as we speak.”

A man who lives at the intersection of Ogeechee Rd. and W. 39 St., who chose to remain anonymous, says he sees crime in his neighborhood all too often.

That area is where SPD say two males were shot, one being a juvenile, just fifteen minutes apart Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve been having issues in this area because as it gets dark at night, everyone wants to park around here and do they’re thing,” says the man.

He says he believes more lights installed in and around the area will help mitigate the crime.

“The police will mess with you about strange things, but they don’t catch people who dump, who will sit and get high out here, and have sex with prostitutes, that’s why this whole strip needs to be lit up,” he says.

One woman, who only wanted to give her first name, Karen, lives near Walter Simmons Ct. where SPD says a man was shot just around 1:40 Sunday morning and another man was shot a about half-mile down the street on Stratford St. about 3 hours earlier.

“I was in my house because I heard shooting after the police got here. I’m like what? The police are already here and they’re still shooting,” Karen tells News 3.

Both tell News 3 they often fear for their safety, and want something to change.

“We’re asking people to put lights up here to light this whole strip up,” says the Ogeechee Rd. and W. 39 St. resident, “We have children. We want to go and play in the park but we can’t”

“There needs to be better security than what’s here now,” says Karen.

Maj. Young says SPD is working around the clock to keep the community safe, and want the community to know their presence is ubiquitous.

“It’s not just the weekends,” says Maj. Young. “Daily we’re out, our neighborhood resource officers, our community engagement team, Savannah Impact; all divisions are constantly out there with our residents, making contact with them, letting them know we are present out there, and that we do care.”

Maj. Young says motives for the crimes SPD is investigating have not been determined yet.
