South Augusta Residents Voice Concerns About Tobacco Road Family YMCA

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Residents in South Augusta are voicing their concerns about the uncertain future of the Family Y facility located on Tobacco Road.

The facility has struggled financially for years, plagued by dwindling membership numbers. Furthermore, a change in ownership has occurred, and the cost of the lease remains excessively high. Moreover, much-needed renovations promise to incur significant expenses.

“The truth is, the lease terms were beyond our means,” said Catie McCauley, president and CEO of Family Y of Greater Augusta. “We’ve been financially supporting this site for the past decade. It’s imperative that we adopt a model that ensures sustainability for many generations, not just a few years ahead.”

Although the location is slated for closure in October, officials are actively collaborating with the community and contractors to secure a new facility. Their commitment to maintaining a presence in South Augusta remains steadfast.
