ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCBD) – An 18-year-old has been charged with murder by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) following a fatal shooting at South Carolina State University on February 12, authorities announced Tuesday.
Khamanti Lytrel Kennedy is now in custody at the Orangeburg County Detention Center facing murder charges.
According to the affidavit, Kennedy arrived on the South Carolina State University campus with three other individuals in his vehicle. Surveillance cameras captured this group entering Hugine Suites together. They were later seen returning to Kennedy’s car to retrieve items, and it was shortly after this moment that the shooting occurred, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to a third person.
Authorities identified one of the victims as 19-year-old Henry L. Crittington, who was pronounced dead at the scene within the Hugine Suites housing complex. The second victim, 18-year-old Terrell Thomas, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. A third individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.
Officials confirmed that while the two deceased victims were not students, the injured party is enrolled at the university.
The report from SLED states that investigators learned from witness statements that Kennedy participated in the purchase of marijuana, which led to the shooting accident.
Surveillance video shows Kennedy fleeing the scene on foot moments after the shooting.
SLED’s investigation is active and ongoing at this time. Anyone with information is advised to reach out to SLED.
