(NEXSTAR) – A range of products, from frozen pizza and pork rinds to seasonings and pet food, have recently been subject to health alerts or recalls due to potential contamination with salmonella.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria responsible for causing the illness known as salmonellosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Infection can occur through various means, including consuming contaminated food, interacting with polluted water, or coming into contact with animals and their environments. A recent outbreak was even traced back to backyard poultry.

The CDC notes that symptoms commonly include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, typically manifesting between six hours and six days post-exposure to the bacteria. While most individuals recover on their own within four to seven days, the illness can pose a more significant threat to young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
