Teenager Charged as Adult in Fatal Market Place Mall Shooting: Legal Update

URBANA, Ill. — In a significant development following last month’s tragic shooting at Champaign’s Market Place Mall, one of the teenagers involved will face trial as an adult. The incident, which resulted in the death of a fellow teenager, has prompted legal proceedings to shift from juvenile to adult court.

Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz confirmed to WCIA on Tuesday that a judge has approved the motion to try 15-year-old Braylin Vellon as an adult. Vellon is one of the two teenagers implicated in the shooting that shocked the community.
