Trump Highlights Achievements in First Year at White House Briefing

(NEXSTAR) — On Tuesday, President Donald Trump took center stage at a White House press briefing, commemorating the start of his second term’s anniversary.

Trump, attending as a “special guest,” took the opportunity to spotlight what he claimed were the significant achievements of his administration. Attendees received a detailed 31-page document titled “365 WINS IN 365 DAYS,” outlining these accomplishments.

In his extensive appearance, which spanned over an hour, Trump addressed an array of subjects. These included immigration enforcement in Minneapolis, his interest in acquiring Greenland, grocery prices, and a new initiative he dubbed the “Board of Peace.”

When a reporter inquired if this Board of Peace was intended to replace the United Nations, Trump remarked, “The U.N. just hasn’t been very helpful.”

Trump’s remarks came as the president faces extraordinary pushback from America’s European allies over his planned tariffs over Greenland, tensions he’ll confront in person this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described Trump’s planned new tariffs over Greenland as “a mistake especially between long-standing allies” and called into question Trump’s trustworthiness, saying that he had agreed last year not to impose more tariffs on members of the bloc.

But Trump announced that starting February, a 10% import tax will be imposed on goods from eight European nations that have rallied around Denmark in the wake of his stepped up calls for the United States to take over the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland.

Trump, speaking Tuesday of his upcoming appearance at the World Economic Forum, said he would highlight U.S. accomplishments in his Davos speech, too.

“I think more than anything else, what I’m going to be speaking about is the tremendous success that we’ve had in one year,” he said. “I didn’t think we could do it this fast.”

Trump also listed off many of the “wins” discussed in a news release issued by the White House on Tuesday, like his efforts to revoke electric car mandates, or his claim that workers with 401K plans are thanking him for making them look like “financial geniuses” in front of their spouses.

He also told a story about his younger years when discussing an executive order to bring back mental institutions and insane asylums. Trump said he remembered playing Little League — reminding reporters he was “quite the baseball player” — when he noticed a building with bars on the windows “loom[ing] over the block.”

He made time, too, to grumble about not winning the Nobel Peace Prize, reiterating his feelings from a message to European officials he made public this week.

“It’s a joke,” he said. “They’ve lost such prestige.”
