UIS Faculty Strike Escalates: Professors Deem University's...

SPRINGFIELD, ILL (WCIA) — The University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) is witnessing a tense standoff as members of the UIS United Faculty continue their strike, citing a significant emotional toll stemming from stalled negotiations. Faculty members are locked in a dispute with university administrators over pay and working conditions, with no resolution in sight.

Since last May, the two sides have engaged in over 20 meetings, exchanging proposals but failing to bridge their differences and reach a consensus.

Amidst these negotiations, Associate English Professor Stephanie Hedge expressed her frustration, stating that the university’s offers have been inadequate. “The offers that the administration is bringing to the table, when they do bring something, are frankly insulting,” Hedge remarked.

Meanwhile, Illinois lawmakers are considering new technological measures aimed at curbing extreme speeding, a separate issue that underscores the state’s broader concerns about safety and regulatory measures.

University officials said their offers are facing a $19 million budget deficit this fiscal year, and said the offers have been created around the finical constraints.

“The university’s position is guided by its responsibility as a public institution to maintain fiscal stability while supporting its academic mission,” UIS officials said in a statement.

As of Friday, the university has proposed a 1% salary increase, along with a $4,308 boost to the minimum salary for entry-level professors.

According to the university, the median faculty salary is $86,000, and about one-third of union members earn six figures.

Faculty leaders have pushed back, arguing the 1% raise amounts to roughly $14 to $16 per paycheck for some members. They are instead calling for nearly a 3% raise and a $12,808 increase to entry-level professor salaries.

But for Hedge, the impact of the strike goes beyond numbers: It’s about students.

This week, UIS hosted its annual STARS showcase, where students are given the chance to present their “scholars and creative works.” Some professors, however, missed the opportunity to attend due to the strike.

“I want to be there with my students. I want to be cheering them on,” Hedge said. “I want to celebrate with them.”

Students have shown support for striking faculty; speaking at rallies, marching alongside them and posting messages on social media.

Hedge said those gestures reinforces her commitment to teaching.

“When they are standing with us, it means everything,” she said. “It shows that what we’re doing is worth it.”

University officials said they remain committed to reaching a resolution as soon as possible. The two parties have begun to meet daily in their attempts to broker a deal.

School administrators said they plan to provide another update Sunday unless significant progress is made sooner.

As negotiations continue, Hedge said her message to Chancellor Janet Gooch and university leaders is simple:

“I want her to invest in UIS, and that means investing in us and investing in our students,” Hedge said.
