ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — In an inspiring show of support for community organizations, the United Way of Southwest Virginia (UWSWVA) announced on Monday its distribution of over $400,000 to a variety of nonprofit groups across the region. These funds are set to significantly bolster the charitable missions of more than a dozen nonprofits in the area.
As detailed in a news release by UWSWVA, the substantial amount of $405,000 from the Community Investment Portfolio is earmarked to directly benefit various programs operating throughout 21 localities within the organization’s service region. This strategic allocation of funds underscores the agency’s commitment to community development.
Among the local nonprofit organizations set to receive this crucial financial boost are Isaiah 117 House of Washington/Smyth/Bristol, the renowned William King Museum of Art, the YWCA of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, and Virginia CARES. These organizations play pivotal roles in supporting and uplifting the community.
United Way has emphasized that the goal of this funding is not only to address pressing needs within the region but also to create pathways for the people of Southwest Virginia to flourish and thrive. This initiative highlights their dedication to fostering a stronger, more resilient community.
“Our nonprofit partners work tirelessly every day to improve the lives of our neighbors,” Megan Parks, Executive Director of United Way of Southwest Virginia, stated in the release. “We are honored to invest $405,000 into organizations that are making a meaningful difference in the areas of health, education, and financial stability. Together, we are creating stronger communities and ensuring that resources reach those who need them most.”

The release said that the latest ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) data show that 52% of households within United Way of Southwest Virginia’s service area are unable to afford the basic cost of living, compared to 38% statewide.
“Through the Community Investment Portfolio, United Way is investing in local nonprofit partners that are helping address these challenges and create opportunities for individuals and families to achieve greater stability and success,” the release states.
