URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Some parents in the Urbana School District are upset over redistricting. Now, the district is trying to reach out to them for ideas.
This fall, the dual language program will be moved to either Thomas Paine or Yankee Ridge Elementary School. The district has held two public forums to collect input already. They want feedback through an online survey to figure out which concept is best.
The two plans show how the district would realign elementary boundaries, depending on which school is selected to host the program. They sent out the original survey to families a few weeks ago through emails, texts, and social media. Fast forward to Tuesday’s board meeting, and the district has seen 263 responses.
Urbana Board of Education President Paul Poulosky said he wants to boost those responses up.
“It’s vital that we listen to the public that’s, you know, paying for the school district that’s electing its board members,” he said. “So it’s absolutely vital we do everything we can to collect input and listen to our constituents.”
Parents from both schools have shown up at these forums to show their frustration. The district will host a third public forum this coming Tuesday at Urbana High School and open another survey that week.
They will then present the results of the forum and survey at the April 2 school board meeting to decide which redistricting plan is more favorable.
