Urbana Shooting Suspect Denied Pre-Trial Release Following Daytime Gunfire Incident

In Urbana, Illinois, a man linked to a daytime shootout was denied release before trial during his initial court appearance. Kenyon Dunn, age 20 and a resident of Urbana, was present via Zoom on Friday for both his arraignment and a detention hearing, overseen by Judge Brett Olmstead.

Dunn is facing a Class X felony charge for being a felon in possession of a machine gun. In court, he chose to waive his right to a preliminary hearing and entered a plea of not guilty.

During discussions regarding his pre-trial detention, Judge Olmstead referenced Dunn’s criminal history, which includes a juvenile court conviction in 2023 and a subsequent adult court conviction in 2025 for a weapons-related offense. The judge noted that Dunn was recently off parole when he allegedly participated in the shootout near the Town and Country Apartments just a day before his court appearance.

Assistant State’s Attorney Tobias Ortega advocated for Dunn’s continued detention, citing surveillance footage from the apartment complex. The footage reportedly captured multiple individuals exchanging gunfire with another unidentified male in the park of the complex. Ortega highlighted the presence of several bystanders, including a toddler, who were forced to flee the area as gunshots erupted.

People who called police and spoke with responding officers reported hearing 15 to 25 gunshots. Officers found “numerous” spent shell casings and bullet damage to cars, playground equipment and an occupied apartment building.

“An eyewitness described a male matching Kenyon Dunn’s description running on the west side of 1020 Kerr Avenue, carrying a firearm,” Ortega added. “The firearm was described as having a drum magazine attached to it.”

Another witness reported to police that it sounded as if gunfire was coming from the apartment above her.

“Officers made contact with that apartment resident…inside the apartment, officers located her brother, the defendant, in the bathroom, removing dark clothing, preparing to shower,” Ortega said.

Dunn’s sister said her brother does not live with her and he was only visiting. Ortega said she told officers that she does not own any firearms and gave consent for them to search her apartment.

“During that search, officers located a live round inside the bathroom toilet bowl where the defendant had been initially located,” Ortega said. “Detectives also located a Glock 19 with a drum magazine and a switch lying on top of a child’s bed in the children’s bedroom.”

Ortega added that when shown the surveillance footage, Dunn’s sister identified her brother as one of the people firing shots into the park, and the spot where he was in the video is the spot where police found multiple shell casings.

Calling Dunn’s alleged behavior, a “disregard for the community’s safety,” Ortega asked that he be denied pre-trial release, saying there are no conditions of release that could protect the community from the threat Dunn poses and calling detention “absolutely necessary.”

Dunn’s private attorney, meanwhile, said the Glock was only found in an apartment that Dunn happened to be in, and he denied having the gun and firing it. Even if Olmstead disagreed with this, Dunn’s attorney said taking the gun away from his client could mitigate the threat he poses.

In the end, Judge Olmstead found that the state had proven its burden, providing clear and convincing evidence that Dunn had possession of the switch-equipped Glock, which he called an uncontrollable, “indiscriminate bullet sprayer” designed for “street havoc.”

“The weapon and the bullet have every indication of being hastily dumped by somebody who just got in there was trying to get the weapon away from them, however they possibly could. The round is in the toilet where he is,” Olmstead said. “You match that with what the video shows, what the witnesses described, the idea that [Dunn’s sister] with her two children is going to have a Glock with a drum magazine and an auto seer and is going to keep it on one of her kids’ beds is an absolute absurdity. That’s his gun.”

Olmstead further found that Dunn’s alleged participation in the shootout is conduct “so wildly, outrageously dangerous to community safety,” that it reflects a lack of concern for anyone nearby. Thus, Olmstead said, he presents a threat to community safety that cannot be mitigated by any conditions of release.

Olmstead denied Dunn pre-trial release and ordered that he remain in the Champaign County Jail as his case proceeds. He is due back in court for a pre-trial hearing on June 16.
