Urgent FDA Alert: Potato Chip Recall Now a Top Health Hazard

(NewsNation) – It’s been almost two months since Utz Quality Foods initiated a voluntary recall concerning specific varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips. This recall has now escalated to the most critical level recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to potential salmonella contamination.

Originally, the chips were recalled by the company in May. Recently, the FDA updated the status to a Class I recall. This classification indicates a “situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” as explained by the agency.

The products involved in this recall include:

  • 8-ounce Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips
  • 2-ounce Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips
  • 1.5-ounce Zapp’s Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (60 count)
  • 2-ounce Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chip
  • 2.5-ounce Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chip
  • 8-ounce Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chip
  • 2-ounce Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips
  • Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Utz issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution,” as the affected seasoning batches tested negative before use.

No illnesses have been reported to Utz in connection with the recalled products.

Consumers are advised to discard the chips immediately. For refunds and questions, consumers can call 1-877-423-0149 Monday through Friday during standard business hours.
