HERNANDO COUNTY — On Sunday evening, firefighters mandated an evacuation in response to a significant brush fire in Hernando County.
The blaze, as reported by Hernando County Fire Rescue, is situated in the Weeki Wachee Preserve near Hernando Beach.
Officials have instructed all residents and businesses on the east side of Shoal Line Boulevard, spanning from Calienta Street to Osowaw Boulevard, to evacuate the area.
The Florida Forest Service indicates that the fire has engulfed 150 acres and is currently 20% contained.
Fire crews have noted the rapid advance of the flames toward Shoal Line Boulevard, advising all residents to head south on Shoal Line Boulevard towards Osowaw Boulevard for evacuation.
The fire started at 5:45 p.m. and is currently east of the Shoal Line in the preserve, according to HCFR.
Crews said strong winds drove the fire through multiple fire stops, threatening businesses on the east side of Shoal Line Boulevard between Catalina Street and Hermosa Boulevard.
HCFR described fire conditions as “erratic” due to high winds, prompting a mutual aid request from Pasco County Fire Rescue for units and personnel to assist with structural protection.
There has been no reported fire damage to structures, and no reported injuries.
Crews are expected to be out all night, and more evacuations will be issued if needed.
