Local reaction to the Augusta National Golf Clubs partnership with Tiger Woods TGR Foundation

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Richmond County School Board members and local golfers reacted to today’s big announcement regarding the Augusta National, TGR Foundation, and The Patch. 

The Augusta National Golf Club, in partnership with Tiger Woods TGR Foundation and Richmond County School System, announced the new TGR Learning Lab coming to Richmond County.

“We are very excited to see what new opportunities this is going to bring to the city of Augusta as well as to our students at the Richmond County school system,” said Mary Jane Abbott, District 8 School Board, Richmond County.

The Learning Lab will be the fourth of its kind in the U.S. It will be located at the Lamar Elementary School and plans to open in 2028.

 Making sure our students have the best chance when they get out into the world,” said Shawnda Stovall, Board President, Richmond County BOE. “We know that STEAM initiatives help our students to be better in math reading and languages, and so it includes, you know, science, technology, engineering arts, and math.”

Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley also announced that Woods will be designing a 9-hole course currently under renovation. The Augusta Municipal Golf Course is known as “The Patch.”  Some previous players are excited for the new course to open and see what Woods creates.

“I think it’s going to be quite interesting just to see put his little touches on it. Because being familiar with the old Patch so it’s going to be quite interesting to see,” said Gabriel Stafford, Resident.

Golf professional and Coach Andre Lacey says he learned from Tiger Woods and is excited about what Woods and Augusta National are bringing to this area.

“Just speaks volumes of where the golf industry is going. Also were, the Augusta National and Tiger Woods are looking to help in the city of Augusta,” said Andre Lacey II, PGA Professional, Head gold Coach Paine College.

The Patch is expected to open in 2026.
