Though opinions vary widely, it’s difficult to find anyone who truly thinks Christopher Nolan has created a poor film. Ranking Nolan’s movies typically means debating what’s merely good versus exceptionally great. So, it came as no surprise that Nolan would work his magic again with “The Odyssey.” Early reviews are pouring in, and as highlighted in Looper’s video above, the film is not just meeting but surpassing even lofty expectations.

At the time of writing, “The Odyssey” boasts an impressive 98% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Looper’s review echoes the prevailing sentiment: “‘The Odyssey’ is a visual extravaganza and a remarkable triumph that firmly establishes Nolan as a cinematic titan, critics be damned.” Adapting Homer’s celebrated epic is an ambitious undertaking, akin to Odysseus challenging the cyclops, yet Nolan’s rendition stands out as an act of cinematic bravado.

Nolan has not only met but exceeded the substantial anticipation. Reviews are showering it with perfect ratings, such as a 5/5 from Robbie Collin at The Telegraph. “Nolan and his team have crafted a filmic dynamo that pushes boundaries, easily making it the standout film of the year,” he noted. Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent was equally astonished: “This epic blockbuster is unprecedented in scale and signifies Nolan’s finest work to date. It should be the landmark that defines his career.” In short, you should make sure to catch “The Odyssey” the moment it hits theaters.

The Odyssey is a true cinematic epic

When classic epic movies are discussed, titles like “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Ben-Hur,” and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy often spring to mind. In a film industry increasingly reliant on green screens and hurried visual effects, recapturing a tangible epic feel seems nearly out of reach. Yet, it appears Christopher Nolan has achieved just that with “The Odyssey.”

While there’s no shortage of acclaim for the film’s visuals, many were quick to praise Matt Damon’s work as Odysseus. Moira MacDonald of The Seattle Times wrote, “Damon’s performance finds some welcome transcendence at the end,” while Brian Truitt of USA Today suggested that an Academy Award could be in the star’s future: “Just give him the best actor Oscar now, for Zeus’ sake.” Damon didn’t just get ripped for “The Odyssey”; his haunting Odysseus has left an indelible mark on viewers.

One can go through all the reviews so far and find some minor quibbles, and more will surely materialize once the film is out for all to see. But one thing can be taken from this consensus: Nolan has given us all a reason to go to movie theaters again with something that demands to be seen on the big screen. As Danny Leigh of The Financial Times put it, “We live in an age starved of awe. It leaves quite a gap in the market for Christopher Nolan — long held to be the last giant in movies and uniquely able to spark that missing wonder.” Need more reasons to buy a ticket?
