Prepare for Heatwave: Rising Temperatures and Humidity with Fewer Storms on the Horizon

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A shift towards a sultry and warm weather pattern is expected to develop, reducing the likelihood of storms from Thursday through the weekend.

While a few scattered showers may drift through the area overnight, Thursday morning promises to be predominantly dry and warm. Early morning temperatures are expected to dip to the lows and mid-70s.

Tuesday’s temperatures are predicted to sharply climb into the mid-90s by the afternoon, with the heat index potentially soaring above 100°F. Prepare for a sizzling afternoon.

Though there is a chance for a few isolated showers or thunderstorms, Thursday will primarily be characterized by dry and hot conditions.

The heat is set to intensify on Friday and Saturday as high pressure moves into the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry. This high-pressure system will not only decrease the probability of storms but also drive temperatures into the mid to upper 90s.

Shower and thunderstorm chances are going to increase slightly for Sunday through next Wednesday. Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to warm into the mid and upper 90s, even with a few more showers and storms possible each afternoon.

Heat index values over the next several days will be 105°F to 110°F at times. Be sure to stay cool by taking plenty of breaks indoors or in the shade and by staying hydrated.

TRACKING THE TROPICS

The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring two areas for potential development in the Atlantic basin.

An area of disorganized cloud cover located over the southeastern U.S. is forecast to move southward over the northern Gulf over the next few days. There is a LOW chance for this area of cloudiness to organize into a tropical system over the next five to seven days.

The main thing that this system will do is help to enhance rain and thunderstorm chances over Florida’s Big Bend, Central and Northeast Florida later this week and into the weekend.

A second system that the National Hurricane Center is watching is located just to the west of Africa and south of the Cape Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic.

This system has some convective development around a broad area of low pressure. The environment is not expected to support significant organization and development of this system.

There is a very low chance (10%) that this system organized into a tropical depression or tropical storm over the next five to seven days.

There is no threat to the U.S. or any other land from this system as of Wednesday evening.
