Marvel’s Black Panther 3 Casts David Jonsson as T’Challa, Confirmed for 2028 Release at SDCC 2026

Big news has emerged for fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe saga, “Black Panther 3.” The game-changing announcement reveals that David Jonsson will step into the iconic role of T’Challa.

Chadwick Boseman, who first brought T’Challa to life in “Black Panther,” was deeply mourned in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” following his untimely passing in 2020. Now, Jonsson, acclaimed for his performances in television’s “Industry” and the film “The Long Walk,” is set to take on the mantle. Fans can expect Jonsson to portray T’Challa II, the son of T’Challa and Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o. This reveal aligns with the narrative thread introduced at the close of “Wakanda Forever,” where T’Challa’s legacy is heralded through his son.

Adding to the excitement, the official word from “Sinners” director Ryan Coogler brings even more to the table. Coogler, who returns triumphantly to helm his third “Black Panther” installment shortly after clinching an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, has unveiled the film’s release date: December 15, 2028.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever started to set up the rest of this beloved MCU series

Ryan Coogler left a lasting mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2018 with “Black Panther.” The groundbreaking film followed Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal of Wakanda’s Prince T’Challa, who debuted in the 2016 crossover hit “Captain America: Civil War.” As T’Challa ascends to the throne following his father’s passing, he faces a formidable challenge in the form of Erik “Killmonger” Stevens, his estranged cousin with ambitions to rule Wakanda.

Boseman’s death in August 2020 from colon cancer, a battle he quietly fought, left Hollywood and audiences around the globe in profound grief. This tragic event presented a significant narrative challenge for the sequel. Consequently, 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” gracefully navigated this by honoring T’Challa’s legacy with a poignant funeral scene. It created space for Queen Ramonda, played by Angela Bassett, and Shuri, portrayed by Letitia Wright, to mourn and ushered Shuri into her new role as a leader.

The “Black Panther” series is undeniably fraught; nobody will ever capture the spirit of T’Challa quite like Boseman did, though Jonsson is sure to do an amazing job. Plus, with Coogler back as the director for “Black Panther 3” and this news out of San Diego Comic-Con today, we know it’s in steady, capable hands.
