Marvel’s Unforeseen Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Plans Unveiled Before Collapse

With the “Avengers: Doomsday” promotional campaign seeming endless, it’s a challenge to recall that this wasn’t always the blueprint for Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. Can you remember Kang the Conqueror? Or perhaps actor Jonathan Majors and the film “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania?” While Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige might hope you forget, the scrapped “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” originally intended as the grand crossover event, doesn’t simply fade from memory. Switching focus to Doctor Doom appears to have been a clever strategic decision. This character has ignited far more excitement among fans compared to Kang. Furthermore, when you consider the tangled plot that the original multiverse narrative entailed, along with the legal controversies and allegations surrounding Jonathan Majors, the shift becomes more understandable. Nonetheless, “The Kang Dynasty” may not have been entirely devoid of merit, and enough details have emerged to hint at how it might have contrasted with the climactic spectacle we’re about to witness.

Rumors and reports of the initial “Kang Dynasty” storyline paint an intriguing picture: No appearance by the Fantastic Four or X-Men, a team-up featuring the Young Avengers, and three concurrent battles against Kang set across various timelines and dimensions. With the anticipation for “Avengers: Doomsday” building, now is an ideal moment for a deeper exploration into what could have transpired.

The roster for “Avengers: Doomsday” is so expansive that it might seem like nearly every character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is involved. However, with the franchise’s extensive history, even the most jam-packed ensemble in blockbuster cinema can’t include everyone.

Michael Waldron, writer of “Loki” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” was the original scribe of “The Kang Dynasty” and said that there was once a plan to have the Young Avengers unite to fight a specific Kang variant. The MCU has teased the team of superhero youngsters at various points, most notably at the end of “The Marvels” when Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) pitches the idea (kind of) to Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). As far as we know, the Young Avengers play no role in “Doomsday.”

Instead, we’re getting the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, some classic Avengers, the Thunderbolts, and the Wakandans and Talokanil as they stood at the end of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The X-Men and Fantastic Four would not have been part of “The Kang Dynasty,” though the MCU as a whole has leaned more into nostalgia crossovers in the years since the success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
