Peter Cullen, the iconic voice actor who passed away at the age of 85, etched his name in the annals of pop culture as the resonant voice behind Optimus Prime, the stalwart leader of the Autobots in the beloved Transformers saga. Since debuting on the airwaves in 1984 with the original “The Transformers” animated series, Cullen returned time and again to breathe life into the character. His portrayal of Optimus Prime was so cherished that even in his later years, as he largely stepped back from voice acting, he continued to lend his voice to the legendary Autobot leader. Cullen’s voice graced six animated television series playing Optimus Prime: “The Transformers” (1984-87), “Transformers: Prime” (2010-13), capped off by the TV film “Transformers Prime Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising”, “Transformers: Rescue Bots” (2011-2016), “Transformers: Robots in Disguise” (2015-2017), “Transformers: Titans Return” (2017-2018), and “Transformers: Power of the Primes” (2018). For those counting even his less conventional TV stints, he brought Optimus Prime to life at the 2014 Kids Choice Awards, a 2018 episode of the documentary series “The Toys That Made Us,” and will posthumously appear in the “Transformers Night” episode on “The Masked Singer” in 2024.

Cullen first brought Optimus Prime to the silver screen in 1986’s animated feature “The Transformers: The Movie,” a film notorious for dramatically offing the character. He later reprised this role in seven live-action blockbusters, all five of Michael Bay’s “Transformers” films from 2007 to 2017, as well as in “Bumblebee” (2018) and the more recent installation “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (2023), where his likeness was affectionately adapted for Optimus Prime’s visage. Additionally, Cullen’s iconic voice featured in “Transformers: The Ride – 3D” at Universal Studios theme parks, riffing off the movie franchise.

No tribute to Cullen’s legacy as Optimus Prime would be complete without acknowledging his contributions to the video gaming world. His commanding voice powered numerous game adaptations tied to the first three Michael Bay films (2007-2011), the “Transformers: Prime” game (2012), and each installment of the “Cybertron” trilogy (2010-2014), inclusive of the “Cybertron Adventures” (2010) spinoff. Cullen also thrilled fans with his performances in standalone games like “Transformers: Devastation” (2015) and “Transformers: Earth Wars” (2016). Remarkably, Cullen’s final foray as Optimus Prime came in 2023 with the introduction of an Optimus Prime skin in “Fortnite,” launched to hype up “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.”
Peter Cullen was not the sole voice behind Optimus Prime. The character was brought to life by several other talents over the years, including Gary Chalk, Neil Kaplan, David Kaye, Jake Foushee, Hiro Diaz, Alan Tudyk, and the notable Chris Hemsworth, who sought inspiration from Cullen while shaping a youthful version of Prime. Yet, Cullen’s deep, courageous tones forever define the legendary Autobot leader.
