In a compelling statement, Representative Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) drew a controversial parallel between President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement and the historical Confederacy.
Pressley’s remarks came as she spoke at Roxbury Community College in Boston. She was actively campaigning for Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), who is currently in a primary battle against Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA).
“This is a movement that’s larger than Trump,” Pressley asserted. “Even after we manage to dislodge the current resident of the Oval Office, the spirit akin to the Confederacy pervades. That’s exactly what MAGA represents.”
Continuing her stark commentary, she added, “White supremacy remains a disturbing reality, as does the enduring presence of anti-Black sentiment.”

As Markey campaigns to secure his Senate seat for another term, he faces the challenge of a primary contest against Moulton. Pressley threw her support behind Markey in March, following her own considerations of a potential Senate run.
In announcing her endorsement, Pressley pointed to their work together on immigration, criminal justice, and other progressive priorities.
“I am proud to endorse his re-election so we can continue advancing the justice-driven solutions our communities need to not only survive, but thrive,” Pressley said.
