The fight for House Speaker has been quite the saga ever since Rep. Kevin McCarthy was shown the door.
Picking a replacement that can be agreed upon has proven something of a challenge.
First, there was Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA). Then he dropped out when he didn’t have the votes.
Now it’s Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) who is the candidate. He is supported by many and McCarthy has thrown his support behind him. Jordan’s support seems to be coalescing with people who had been no or noncommital now saying they will vote for him.
But the question remains if Jordan will have enough for the vote or if there will be too many holdouts. The current word seems to be that he’s very close, although it’s not clear yet, with the vote scheduled for Tuesday.
There was also a move by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) to work out something with the Democrats to find a compromise. But now, as we reported earlier, he has thrown his support to Jordan. That’s a pretty good indication right there that Jordan can rally the troops and command support.
How do you know Jordan would be a great choice? Democrats are flipping out.
How much are they flipping out?
One proposal from Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) shows just how desperate they are, but it is funny.

“I could see President George W. Bush serving as Speaker of the House,” Sherman said. “He could come back. I’m not a real fan of how the Iraq war went.” He then went on to say that he thought “any reasonable Republican was someone that Democrats could work with if it was part of a system.”
Now that’s pretty hilarious. “Any reasonable Republican” = anyone Democrats could get behind. And even funnier when you think how Democrats have demonized Bush in the past. I don’t think Sherman has a very good idea of what’s going on in the minds of Republicans when he puts this out there. The chances of this happening are zero. But that’s the Democrats at this point, just throwing things out there, hoping something will stick, as a roadblock to Jordan winning as Speaker.
Why would Republicans throw any current candidate under the bus so they can throw in with what the Democrats want? What the Republican base wants is someone in there who will address the issues that never get addressed and who understands the current problems.
No one was jumping on board with Sherman’s idea from the left or the right.
It would be a good idea for Mr. Sherman to refrain from alcohol prior to interviews.
