Elon Musk- Trump Dispute: What Happened?

The US president Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, one of his former closest pals, are now in dispute over President Trump’s hallmark “Big Beautiful Bill.”

The retaliatory outburst was made public on social media, as the two men traded disputes on their networks, Truth Social and X.

Donald Trump began by meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the Oval Office. The US president told reporters, “Elon and I had a great relationship,” in response to Elon Musk’s criticism of his “Big, Beautiful Bill.” I am uncertain if we will continue.

“He knew every aspect of this bill,” Trump told reporters, adding that he was “very disappointed in Elon.” Until just after he departed, he had no issues, and he knew it better than most others. I’m disappointed in Elon, even though he hasn’t said anything negative about me yet and has just said the nicest things about me. I’m sure it will happen next. I have greatly aided Elon.

Musk’s dispute with Trump intensified after he refuted Trump’s assertion in a series of posts. “False,” Musk said, “this bill was passed in the dead of night so quickly that nearly no one in Congress could even read it, and it was never even shown to me once!”

Trump would have “lost the election” without him, he continued, before lamenting what he described as “such ingratitude.”

The Space X CEO then threatened to decommission the Dragon spacecraft, which carried home astronauts who had been delayed on the ISS for months, in response to the president’s warning to end Musk’s government contracts and subsidies. This could potentially cause chaos for US space programs. Musk withdrew the warning a few hours later.

Musk also asserted that Trump was in the Jeffrey Epstein files, warned that Trump’s global tariffs would “cause a recession in the second half of this year,” and recommended that Trump be impeached and replaced by JD Vance.

In a statement to CNN, the White House called the Epstein claims an “unfortunate episode.”

Steve Bannon, a longstanding Trump supporter and opponent of Elon Musk, said there were reasons to deport the US-citizen tech magnate. “I am of the strong belief that he is an illegal alien, and he should be deported from the country immediately,” Bannon told the New York Times, adding that they should start an official investigation into his immigration status.

Tesla’s stock plunged after Trump and Musk’s epic outburst. At market closure on Thursday, they fell by around 14.2%, depleting the company’s value by about $152 billion.

The decline in Tesla’s share price on Thursday knocked about $8.73bn off Musk’s total net worth, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The reported $152 billion drop also decreased the company’s value to roughly $900 billion.
