Google is now linking in-office attendance to performance reviews, but the union slammed the company’s ‘working conditions’ and said the building doesn’t have enough desks.

Google forced its employees into a hybrid work schedule in April 2022 and is now tying those three mandatory days in the office to their performance reviews, it announced shortly before 8pm on June 7.

‘We want to see Googlers connecting and collaborating in person, so we’re limiting remote work to exception only,’ spokesperson Ryan Lamont told Fortune

Most employees already follow the three-day hybrid schedule, according to an internal email, viewed by the Wall Street Journal

‘We’ve heard from Googlers that those who spend at least three days a week in the office feel more connected to other Googlers, and that this effect is magnified when teammates work from the same location,’ Fiona Cicconi, Chief People Officer, wrote. ‘Of course, not everyone believes in “magical hallway conversations,” but there’s no question that working together in the same room makes a positive difference.’

The IT giant did not specify how attendance would affect reviews. DailyMail.com has contacted Google for comment.

Googlers are not happy about the decision and the Alphabet Workers Union has released a statement, saying the company has not offered good working conditions.

‘So many Googlers enjoy our office and hybrid culture because it enables us todo our best work. The real issue is the fact that we do not have meaningful agency regarding our working conditions,’ the union wrote in a statement.

‘We have maintained quality performance with flexible office attendance.’

Chris Schmidt, a software engineer and union member, argued that worker’s professionalism has been disregarded ‘overnight’ in favor of ‘ambiguous attendance tracking practices tied to our performance evaluations.’

The union argued that some teams would have no one to collaborate with in the office and that the New York City office cannot hold a whole team of people.

‘A one size fits all policy does not address these circumstance,’ he stated. ‘We deserve a voice in shaping the policies that impact our lives to establish clear, transparent, and fair working conditions for all of us.’

A spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that the company was integrating the hybrid model into ‘workplace policies’ as it has been utilizing it for ‘more than a year.’

‘Our hybrid approach is designed to incorporate the best of being together in person with the benefits of working from home for part of the week,’ a spokesperson said.

Google is the latest company to tighten on remote work, following Disney, Starbucks, and Amazon.

Amazon called its employees back in February, citing that is ‘easier to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture when we’re in the office together most of the time and surrounded by our colleagues.’

However, employees are fed up and walked out last week, holding signs that read: ‘I hate commuting,’ among others.
