THE 22-YEAR-OLD boyfriend of a missing pregnant teenager has been charged with her murder two weeks after she disappeared.
Gregory Groom was slapped with the charges on Tuesday after Kylee Monteiro’s body was discovered inside his home, police said.
The 18-year-old from Attleboro, Massachusetts, an hour and a half south of Boston, was 11 weeks pregnant when she was reported missing on August 7 by Groom.
She was last seen at her boyfriend’s residence the day before when the couple had gotten into an argument.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for his home and discovered human remains “consistent with” the missing teen on Tuesday.
Groom, who was already facing assault charges stemming from the couple’s fight, was then slapped with a murder charge.
In a heartbroken statement on Facebook, Monteiro’s sister Kitty Monteiro said that she was grateful for the hard work of detectives in finding answers.
“I know this is not the ending we all wanted but this is closure for us and this gives Kylee the opportunity to rest in peace with her mom and her baby,” she wrote online.
“I think it’s a good time to remind everyone to check in regularly with people, tell them you love them every chance you get, take photos every single day, and don’t ever forget that people love you.
“So many people. You will always be remembered Kylee and baby Eleanor.”
Groom will be arraigned on Wednesday morning.
‘SO LOVING’
Kylee had just graduated from Attleboro High School in June, and was living in a homeless shelter for pregnant women when she disappeared, according to The Sun Chronicle.
Her mom had died five years ago, and she lived with her aunt and uncle when she was in high school.
Kylee’s sisters initially said they were mystified by her disappearance and did not suspect Groom of being abusive.
However, one of Kylee’s sisters Faith Monteiro claimed it was difficult to get in touch with Groom after her sibling disappeared.
“I wasn’t able to get a hold of him for a little while – he was receiving a lot of threats and secluded himself,” she told ABC affiliate WCVB before Groom’s arrest.
“We went looking the other day and have been in contact ever since.”
Video taken outside Groom’s home and of the surrounding wooded area showed detectives entering the property with excavation equipment.
Some cops carried bags as they walked into the trees, according to local outlets.
Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said they are still waiting for confirmation from the medical examiner.
One friend of Kylee described the teenager as “so loving and caring,” according to WCVB.
“Kylee will always be remembered and always be loved.”
