In a dramatic turn of events in Garland, Texas, a man was fatally shot during an attempted carjacking involving a family of eight on Sunday afternoon. The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m., following a chaotic series of events.
According to NBC DFW, the suspect was initially driving a green car when he allegedly collided with two other vehicles. Following the crash, he reportedly exited his vehicle and began a desperate attempt to commandeer several other cars in the vicinity.
Witnesses described the man as frantically moving from one vehicle to another, trying door handles in a bid to find an unlocked car. When these attempts failed, he ran into a convenience store parking lot, setting his sights on a Chevrolet Impala occupied by a family of eight.
As reported by FOX 4 News, the father inside the Impala was seen grappling with the man, who was determined to drive away with the vehicle while the family remained inside.
In a bid to protect his family, the father drew a firearm and shot the suspect, bringing the attempted carjacking to an end. The wounded man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said, “It seemed to be self-defense.”
He added, “It kind of all happened like really fast.”
