A COSTCO employee has tried to put the trend of receipt checking into perspective for angry shoppers.
Shopper complaints about having to show a receipt when leaving some big box stores like Walmart and Costco have flooded social media in recent months as the antitheft trend has become more popular across the country.
Some shoppers have said that receipt checking infringes on their right to privacy, while others have simply stated that the practice annoys them.
Thousands of posts and videos have been posted showing how shoppers try to avoid the receipt checkers too.
But not everyone thinks that the common antitheft measure is something people should be worrying about.
“Even more insensitive given the fact that a genocide is currently being carried out in Palestine,” Costoco employee Chris/Fern
(@bittersoylatte) posted on X.
“But how horrible it is for you to have to show your receipt to someone!!!” she said in the tweet.
Chris/Fern is referring to the Israel-Hamas war that began on October 7 when Hamas stormed Israel’s borders around the Palestinian territory of Gaza, violently killing approximately 1,400 people and taking hundreds hostage.

After the attack, Israeli authorities promised to rain down “Hellfire” on Gaza, the small territory home to over two million Palestinians, where Hamas leadership is based.
In the three weeks since the Hamas attack, Israel has bombarded Gaza with air attacks that have killed at least 9,000 people, according to the Hamas-led government of the area.
Many people have accused Israel of committing genocide because of its military actions in Gaza and blockade of aide to civilians.
Most of the victims have been civilians who were non-affiliated with Hamas, according to several news outlets.
Hamas also claims that two-thirds of the victims have been children.
But despite the war, social media users continue to concentrate on small daily annoyances like receipt checking, Chris/Fern said.
New videos of customers refusing to talk to receipt checkers surface almost every day.
And several lawyers have taken to social media to help shoppers understand whether they are legally obligated to show their receipts.
While laws vary in every state, lawyers have said that the legality of checking and detaining a shopper really depend on the context.
