AN attorney has warned that Walmart shoppers should show their receipt at self-checkout and refrain from vehemently refusing the anti-theft method.
The retail law expert took to social media to issue a counterposition to viewers who argued they don’t have to legally show their receipt to Walmart staff.
YouTuber and Michigan-based attorney Steve Lehto (@stevelehto) explained in a recent clip that contrary to many comments he receives on previous videos about receipt-checking, it may be pointless to refuse the showing of a receipt at Walmart if you actually paid for your items.
Lehto explained that it is true that customers at Walmart and other retailers who don’t have membership-based shopping do not legally have to show a receipt when employees request to at the checkout area.
As The U.S. Sun previously reported, other lawyers have noted that some states have differing laws that could allow staff to detain a person for a period of time if they suspect or have probable cause for potential shoplifting.
They are also seemingly not allowed to chase or physically restrict a customer from leaving.
The situation at stores like Costco or Sam’s Club may differ because they could have a clause in a customer’s membership contract that requires them to show receipts when asked.
Even so, Lehto said that shoppers at Walmart should still show their receipts to employees despite the heated controversy over the subject.
“You are the sheep if you don’t show your receipt at Walmart,” the attorney argued.
He explained that thousands of people commented on another video discussing the matter and voiced an opposing view.
Some allegedly compared the act of submitting to showing a receipt to the “first steps toward socialism,” communism, fascism, and even “Nazi Germany.”
“Nine out of 10 of them are wrong,” Lehto argued of the fuming customers.

“By that, I mean — literally 90 percent of the comments say you shouldn’t show your receipt at Walmart because by doing so, you’re a sheep.”
“That’s backwards,” the attorney added.
As the video continued, Lehto went through a mock purchase situation and claimed that some shoppers’ viewpoint that they may be taking a stand against Walmart by not showing their receipt is not necessarily logical.
According to the attorney, Walmart already got what it wanted out of the situation in the first place — shoppers’ money.
“You walked out that door and you ‘taught that guy a lesson’ because you don’t want to start in that long march down the road to leftism, socialism…” Lehto said.
“But Walmart’s got your money.”
He continued: “All that happened is you went into a store whose policies you disagree with, and you gave them your money.”
“You are a sheep.”
Lehto claimed that Walmart’s decision to have a receipt-checker at the checkout area is similar to why they have a greeter when customers enter the store — research-backed data that benefits that company.
“The point is, that person standing there, they’ve done the study and discovered that if you have. a person standing there asking for receipts — whether or not anybody shows them the receipt — it actually does cut down a little bit on shoplifting,” the attorney told viewers.
“It’s enough, again, to justify the paying of one person, minimum wage, to stand and say, ‘May I see your receipt?'”
For those who are adamantly against Walmart’s processes and disagree with its policy, Lehto’s advice is to shop somewhere else.
