A WALMART customer has shared his strong views on self-checkout and receipt checks demanding the company hire more staff if it doesn’t trust it’s customers.
Customers of the retail giant continue to slam its self-checkout and receipt check policies.
“Idk I refuse to show my receipt at Walmart. They can either provide staff to check me out or they can trust that I did it right,” said a user who responded to a video that was posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I’m not going to do all the work to check myself out and then stand there while they check my receipt. It’s insulting.”
The video showed a frantic Walmart employee who was trying to check a family’s receipt before they left the store.
“We checked out at the register & this man ran from self-checkout and stopped our cart and held us against our will,” the text over the video read.
“Before this video, he pushed the cart into my husband while [my kids] were in the cart.”
As the family was leaving, the employee can be seen running toward the automatic doors locking them so the family couldn’t leave.
It is unclear what occurred before the video started, or whether the Walmart employee had reason to believe the couple had done something wrong.
The employee asked to see their receipt and the man behind the camera told his wife to show him.
“We’ll show it [the receipt] to you, but we’ll sue you for putting your hands on my [inaudible] my f**king daughters are riding,” the man behind the camera said the the employee.
“I did not touch your cart,” the employee responded.
“No, no no. You’re going to lose your job and everything buddy. You really want to lose your job? For Walmart?” the man asked the employee.
The woman can also be heard asking the employee if they stole something and the employee responds ‘no.’
Another user commented below the post:
“I was stopped like this at a Fiesta [Mart] in Dallas off Jefferson. And I showed them my receipt right away and I asked them did they see me steal anything and the little security guy said ‘No,’ but a cashier told him to check me,” they said.
“It’s traumatizing and embarrassing!”
Walmart is allowed to ask a shopper to see their receipt, but if there is no probable cause for them stealing, employees cannot force them to show it.
It is unknown whether Walmart had reason to stop the shoppers shown in this video.
Receipt checks are protected by a law called Shopkeeper’s Privilege.
“If they have reasonable suspicion that you stole something at the store, they can detain you. That’s why they’re asking for a receipt,” lawyer Ugo Lord explained in a TikTok video.
However, the company must have reasonable grounds to detain a customer or they can be held liable.
