John Thune: Senate Republicans Won’t Let Democrats Undo GOP Gains

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said Senate Republicans will not sit back while what he called the “far-left, socialist wing of the Democrat Party” works to reverse their policy achievements.

In a post on X, Thune pointed to what he described as a “strong record of accomplishment” built by Senate Republicans over the past two years—one he said has produced safer communities, put more money in Americans’ hands and opened new opportunities for families and businesses.

“Over the last two years, Senate Republicans have put up a strong record of accomplishment that’s created safer streets, more money in Americans’ pockets, and new opportunities for families and businesses to get ahead,” Thune wrote. He said Republicans had overcome Democratic opposition to block what he called the largest tax increase in U.S. history, strengthen border security, confirm President Trump’s Cabinet at the fastest rate in 20 years and approve conservative judges at a pace not seen since the Reagan administration.

Thune also said he was eager to begin the “important work” awaiting Senate Republicans in the coming months.

“As we head into 2027, Senate Republicans will not stand idly by as the far-left, socialist wing of the Democrat Party attempts to unwind everything we’ve done,” Thune wrote. “Thankfully, we still have President Trump in the White House, and we’ll work with him to stop the worst impulses of Democrat extremism. We cannot let their fringe positions become the mainstream.”

Thune’s comments came after Democrats won majorities in both the House and Senate. CNBC reported that Democrats were projected to flip Senate seats previously held by Republicans in Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.

In July, President Donald Trump urged Thune to keep the Senate in session so lawmakers could “terminate the filibuster and pass the SAVE America Act.”

Thune’s statement quickly drew criticism online, with several social media users calling on the Republican leader to resign.

“It’s time for you to step down,” conservative journalist Jack Posobiec wrote on X.

“Resign, you pathetic failure,” Sean Davis, CEO and co-founder of The Federalist, wrote in response.

“‘Democrat obstruction’?” another user asked. “The only obstruction was Republicans not carrying out the will of the people while we had the Presidency, the House, the Senate, and the Supreme Court. Resign in disgrace.”
