A man from Wales who took steroids and worked out three times a die has died from a heart attack, an inquest has heard.

Carl Lane, 29, who was a labourer, was rushed to hospital with chest pains and then taken to St David’s Hospice in Llandudno on May 12 where he died.

Senior Coroner for North Wales east and central John Gittens said that they suspect that Mr Lane had taken cocaine in the lead up to him being hospitalised, an inquest held today at Ruthin County Hall heard.

They also heard about how the 29-year-old, who had recently been released from prison, would inject himself with steroids regularly and go to the gym three times a day.

Mr Lane was diagnosed with hypoxia and moved to a hospice after he was taken to hospital with pains in his chest.

Following a post mortem, Dr Mark Atkinson put the 29-year-old’s provisional cause of death down as a result of a hypoxic brain injury due to a cardiac arrest.

In a tribute, a friend of Mr Lane, Ashley Hughes said: ‘Always thought of Carl as a brother he grew up with us… [and] had the best childhood we could of asked for.

‘Life isn’t going to be the same without him, he [became] such a good young man with a bright future ahead of him.’

Another friend, Carl Andrew Jones said: ‘Carl was my best friend, we had our up and downs over the years but we always laughed about them afterwards.

‘He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone.’
