Marcus Maddison Jailed: Why Was He Sentenced To Prison?

He assaulted a customer in a kebab shop line by throwing cheesy fries at her and then punched her in the face and has been jailed.

Marcus Maddison struck the 60-year-old victim hard while sporting a sizable ring on his finger, leaving her with complicated face fractures.

Maddison, a Newcastle youth squad player who started his career, had dubbed the woman’s daughter a “fat sl**” before the assault.

After the former midfielder exited The Gate nightclub in Darlington, County Durham, around 3 am on September 25, 2022, violence broke out.

The victim testified before Teesside Crown Court that the vicious hit is still causing her medical issues.

“My jaw was broken in several places,” she claimed. On my left side of the mouth, I am unable to eat. My teeth are giving me trouble.

My general practitioner has put me on a number of different medications to manage a number of persistent ailments, including the fact that I can no longer smell properly. Since the assault, I’ve been going to my doctor frequently. My taste buds are affected, and I have nerve damage on the left side of my face.

In a kebab shop, the ex-Darlington footballer got involved in a dispute over queue jumping before it turned violent.

After calling his victim’s daughter a “fat sl**,” Maddison, 29, allegedly said: “You come near me and I’m going to pelt these cheesy chips at you.”

He then stumbled backwards before getting up, hurling the cheese chips, and striking the woman in the face hard.

She was later discovered in the Darlington town center sitting on the ground covered in blood.

Following the incident, Maddison, of High Causeway, Peterborough, pleaded guilty to a charge of causing great bodily harm.

He quit drinking as a result of his actions that night, according to Tabitha Buck, who offered mitigation, and he completely understood that his response was excessive.

The former player was sentenced to 20 months in prison by Recorder Paul Reid for the brutal assault.

“You struck the woman; you hit her with extreme force with your right fist and on your right hand you were wearing a large metal ring and that ring amounts to a weapon,” he said.

“This is an incident of egregious violence in a public place.”

Speaking after an earlier hearing, a spokesperson for Darlington FC said: “The club was made aware of an alleged incident and conducted an immediate disciplinary investigation. After discussions with the player concerned the club agreed to mutually terminate his contract with immediate effect at that time.

“Darlington FC is a fan-owned organization and has zero tolerance for any form of abuse, violence, or discrimination.”

The court was informed that Maddison had previously been of excellent character. He began his career with Newcastle United’s junior program and played for Gateshead before spending more than 240 games and scoring 62 goals in six seasons with Peterborough between 2014 and 2020.

In February 2021, he transferred from Charlton Athletic to Bolton Wanderers on loan, however he only played in 10 games for the whites.

He made the decision to leave the professional game in June 2021 for mental health-related concerns.
