Police responded to gunshots around 2 pm
Police responded to reports of gunshots around 2 pm EST near the Clara Muhammad Square in West Philadelphia.
Authorities believe two groups exchanged gunfire on the street and at least one officer fired shots at a gunman.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel confirmed that a teenager carrying a weapon was shot by an officer on the scene and is in stable condition.
A 22-year-old was believed to have been shot in the stomach during the gunfire and another individual arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds to his hands.
Eye witness describes scene
Abdallah Legh, a manager of a nearby market, told Fox affiliate WTXF-TV that he heard what sounded like three or four shots fired.
He added that up to 30 children came into his store shortly after to seek shelter.
“Everybody was running,” he said.
Authorities speak to press
Philadelphia police confirmed during a press conference that an officer shot a juvenile.
A total of five people are in custody.
Police confirmed that a 15-year-old was shot by an officer and is in stable condition.
Large police presence in the area
There is still a large police presence in the area as the investigation remains active.
Victims taken to local hospital
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that at least two victims were shot and taken to a local Pennsylvania hospital.
One of the patients is being treated as a prisoner.
Reunification area set up
Police have set up a reunification spot for family members who were separated when the gunfire erupted.
Officers are attempting to secure the area and recover evidence during the ongoing investigation.
