In a startling case that highlights the lengths to which some will go to exploit U.S. resources, an illegal immigrant from Romania devised an audacious scheme to enter the United States. Marius Catalin Trica, who has been at the center of multiple smuggling incidents, orchestrated his latest entry by feigning injuries to hitch a ride on a Mexican ambulance, aiming to gain access to an American hospital.
This brazen attempt to cross the southern border is not the first for Trica, who has a history of illegal entries into the U.S. Last November, he faced the consequences of his fraudulent actions when he pleaded guilty to bank fraud in federal court. Consequently, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his involvement in a scheme to steal food stamp benefits, targeting one of America’s most vulnerable populations.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has been vigilant in addressing these crimes. Eddy Wang, a spokesperson for HSI, emphasized the agency’s dedication to both prosecuting offenders and safeguarding U.S. citizens from international fraud schemes. “Our HSI special agents are committed to not only bringing criminals like this to justice but also ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens are protected from the global reach of fraud,” Wang stated.

Trica, along with his co-conspirators, imported skimming devices and fraudulent IDs into the U.S., using them to skim Americans’ financial data and use cloned cards with EBT account numbers, belonging to Americans, to withdraw money from ATMs in Los Angeles, California.
