The Eastern European nation of Hungary is taking a much different posture than the rest of NATO at the alliance’s annual summit, which is being held this year in the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius. While the rest of the alliance is maneuvering for as much war in Ukraine as possible, Hungary is calling for peace at the summit that includes an appearance by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is blasting NATO for not admitting Ukraine into the alliance as fast as he wants.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán released a video statement as the NATO summit got underway, saying that “instead of shipping weapons to Ukraine we should finally bring peace.”

“We are in Vilnius at the two-day NATO summit. The most important topic is the Russian-Ukrainian War. The Hungarian position remains unchanged and we will represent it. Instead of bringing weapons to Ukraine, we should bring peace.”

“[A] Ceasefire is necessary, and instead of war, peace negations should start as soon as possible,” Orbán said in the video statement. “The Hungarian position is clear. Since the war is in our neighborhood and tens of thousands of Hungarian people are in immediate danger because there are Hungarians living in Transcarpathia, Hungary insists that NATO should not change its previous position. NATO is a military defense alliance. It was created to protect its member states [and] not to carry out military actions on the territory of other countries.”

“At the start of the negotiations the Hungarian position completely coincides with NATO’s position since NATO [as an organization] does not send troops, does not send weapons, does not train combat military units, but rather tries to strengthen the defense capabilities of its own member states. This is necessary and right and Hungary will support it.”

While Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is calling for a ceasefire in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling for quite the opposite and is making his own appearance at the NATO summit to call for increased military support from NATO members (who have already sent hundreds of billions of dollars in aid and weaponry), as well as for the alliance to admit Ukraine as its newest member. Doing so would immediately obligate NATO to enter the Russo-Ukrainian War.

Just ahead of the NATO summit, where Zelensky and his entourage arrived in their signature military-style fatigues, the Ukrainian leader slammed the alliance’s “unprecedented and absurd” refusal to admit Ukraine as a member and claimed that admitting Ukraine and immediately going to war with Russia as a result will make NATO “stronger.”
