A forecaster said tonight will “stay frost free under the blanket of cloud” – after the mercury dipped to 0.9C overnight.

Temperatures are expected to remain unsettled this week with cloudy skies and murky mists hanging over the country.

But as the mercury rises to an average of 10C, Brits are enjoying the prospect of warmer days to come.

It comes after blankets of snow covered the UK last week.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Many of us will start Monday with grey and murky skies, with patchy light rain or drizzle in places.

“The far northwest of Scotland and parts of Devon and Cornwall will see some brighter spells.”

Tonight will “stay frost free under the blanket of cloud”, they added.

But later this week will turn foul as outbreaks of rain spread across the UK, “turning heavy at times”.

Tomorrow will see outbreaks of rain spread across the UK, with the south slightly drier and the west breezy and windy.

Between Wednesday and Friday, rain is expected to continue where it will be particularly heavy in the north west.

There will be some fine and dry weather in the southeast of the country at times.

The unsettled weather will continue over the weekend.

Friday will see longer spells of rain, with thunderstorms developing in some places and the wet weather clearing in northern areas.

“Through the weekend further bands of rain expected to push in from the west and southwest, breaking to showers at times.”

The weather for the weekend past saw fog and cool temperatures around the country on Saturday, while rain on Sunday.
