Alejandro Mayorkas is married to Tanya Mayorkas. It is unclear for how long the two have been together.
The couple share two daughters and live together in Washington DC.
Little else is known about Tanya, but she occasionally writes for Medium.
In 2021, Tanya confronted protestors outside of their family home.
The protestors had unfurled a 30-foot banner that read Biden President Trump Policy, accusing Mayorkas of carrying former president Donald Trump’s border policies.
The group, Never Again Action, tweeted that Tanya said she was “angry” and that this was her “family home” before leaving.
Who is Alejandro Mayorkas?
Alejandro Mayorkas is an American lawyer and politician originally from Havana, Cuba.
After graduating from Loyola Law School, he became an Assistant US Attorney for the Central District of California.
Former president Bill Clinton appointed Mayorkas the US Attorney for the Central District of California.
In 2009, he was voted the director of Citizenship and Immigration Services for Barack Obama’s Administration.
President Joe Biden nominated Mayorkas to be the Secretary of Homeland Security in 2020.
He was sworn into the position by vice president Kamala Harris on February 2, 2021.
Mayorkas is the first Latino immigrant to serve as the Secretary of Homeland Security.
Why was Alejandro Mayorkas impeached?
On February 13, 2024, the United States House of Representatives voted to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas by a vote of 214–213.
The House cited a “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and “a breach of public trust.”
This is only the second time that a cabinet member has been impeached in US history.
This was the third time the House attempted to impeach him.
On February 6, 2024, the House rejected the campaign and voted against impeaching him.
On November 13, 2023, an unsuccessful impeachment campaign was led by Marjorie Taylor Green.
